Price indicators for timber have been approved for the first time in Russia

Rosleskhoz and exchange platforms have approved the methodology for calculating price indicators for timber. This is a step towards increasing the transparency and efficiency of timber exchange trading.

Currently, state logging agencies sell timber on three trading platforms: the Petersburg Exchange, the CTS Exchange, and the Eastern Exchange. Each of them is developing its own price indicators. The Rosleskhoz working group approved an action plan to improve exchange mechanisms related to the sale of timber.

Alexey Abramov, Head of the Department for Supervision and Use of Forests for Timber Harvesting: “The action plan provides for the preparation by all trade organizers of proposals for calculating exchange commodity indices and indicators. We have agreed on the methodology for calculating such indicators on the CTS Exchange. We will monitor prices and watch the dynamics of organized timber trades with already approved indicators."

The creation of a Russian system of indicators plays a key role in the development of the domestic exchange commodity market. Joint efforts of government bodies, business representatives and trade participants will help make the indicators a reliable guide for transparent pricing in the industry.

Indicators and indices are published for various categories of timber: pine and spruce logs for sawing and planing, pine, spruce and birch pulpwood, birch logs for the production of peeled veneer, as well as mixed-species firewood and pine lumber.
