The Ministry of Natural Resources held a roundtable discussion on the development of forest climate projects.
Evgeny Markov, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation: "Our goal is to make every effort to find solutions that will remove existing barriers and establish effective collaboration, including between the Federal Forestry Agency and businesses, so that forest climate projects are more actively generated across the country. This is extremely relevant today, especially for sparsely forested regions, as well as regions subject to annual forest fires, and forested areas with unique natural potential."
Forest climate projects are aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions by increasing the absorptive capacity of forests. Amendments to the Forest Code, which took effect on January 1, 2025, expanded the scope for their implementation.
The process includes several stages: documentation preparation, implementation of measures, verification of results, and the issuance of carbon units. The projects are implemented based on a bilateral agreement between Rosleskhoz and the contractor, and the agency reserves the right to refuse or terminate the agreement in the event of violations.
Currently, three forest climate projects on forest fund lands are registered in the carbon unit registry. They include forest fire protection in Krasnoyarsk Krai and the establishment and planting of forest crops in Sakhalin Oblast, the Republic of Tatarstan, and Nizhny Novgorod and Tyumen Oblasts.
