The level of wooden housing construction in Russia has reached a historical maximum
According to Rosstat, over the past ten years, the level of wooden housing construction in Russia has doubled and reached a historical maximum in the entire history of observations.
From January to July 2024, the volume of housing commissioned increased by 19% compared to the same period in 2023 and amounted to 62 million m2. Since 2016, the share of individual housing construction in the total commissioning of residential buildings has increased annually. In 2023, the share of individual housing construction reached 53.1%. The total area of residential buildings built by the population from January to July 2024 amounted to 43.6 million m2, which is 23% more than in the same period last year.
Along with traditional wooden house-building, in recent years there has been a significant increase in interest in frame houses and industrial production of prefabricated wooden house kits. There is also a trend towards the use of wooden structures and CLT panels.
Over 10 years - from 2013 to 2023 - the volume of wooden houses commissioned more than doubled, reaching a historical maximum of 15.7 million m2 by the end of 2023. The share of wooden housing construction in the total volume of housing construction increased to 14.2%.
From January to July of this year, the leaders in terms of individual housing construction rates, demonstrating growth compared to the same period in 2023, were:
- Moscow Region — 5.9 million m2 (+25%);
- Krasnodar Region — 2.6 million m2 (+5%);
- Leningrad Region — 2 million m2 (+26%).
Next comes the Republic of Tatarstan with a result of 1.9 million m2, which is 39% more than in the same period last year, Bashkortostan — 1.4 million m2 (+16%), as well as Dagestan (1.95 million m2, a sevenfold increase compared to last year). In the Chechen Republic, Rostov, Sverdlovsk and Tyumen regions, growth rates reached 1.1–1.3 million m2.
Experts at Rosselkhozbank predict that by the end of 2024, the share of wooden housing construction in the total construction volume will reach 15%, which will amount to 18 million m2. By 2028, the total volume may approach 27 million m2, and its share — 17%.
