Timber reserves increased by 16 million m3 last year

According to the state forest register, in 2024 the total timber stock in Russian forests increased by 16 million m3 and reached 82.3 billion m3. The increase is recorded annually - due to forest restoration work and clarification of forest management materials.

Vyacheslav Spirenkov, Deputy Head of the Federal Forestry Agency: “Russia traditionally ranks first in the world in terms of forest area - 1.189 billion hectares - and second in terms of timber stock, second only to Brazil in this indicator. Both the area of restored forests and the timber stock are growing annually. If we talk about the main forest-forming species, then the first place here is traditionally occupied by larch (28.1% of the total area of all tree species), followed by pine (19.2%), birch (16.4%), spruce (12.6%), cedar (9.2%)».

The largest increase in timber reserves was recorded in the Arkhangelsk Region (+101.5 million m3). Next come the Sakha Republic (+83 million m3), the Udmurt Republic (+41.5 million m3), Sverdlovsk Region (+20 million m3) and Khabarovsk Krai (+16.5 million m3).

The top five regions with the largest total timber reserves include:

  • Krasnoyarsk Krai — 11.2 billion m3;
  • Irkutsk Region - 8.4 billion m3;
  • Sakha Republic (Yakutia) - 8.3 billion m3;
  • Khabarovsk Krai - 4.9 billion m3;
  • Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug - 3.1 billion m3.
