International Day of Forests
Every year, March 21 is celebrated as the International Day of Forests. The theme of this celebration in 2024 highlights how modern technologies are enriching the ability to conserve and use forests: “Forests and Innovation: New Solutions for a Better World.”
In recent years, many solutions have been developed aimed at developing monitoring; now this task is facilitated by unmanned aerial vehicles, which allow inspecting vast areas. Hundreds of high-quality satellite images are available to specialists, and there are devices in orbit that can transmit data in real time. In addition, innovations make it possible to quickly identify destructive forest fires and illegal logging.
An innovative approach is no less important in forest restoration as part of global measures to restore ecosystems. A healthy forest not only sequesters carbon, but also supports biodiversity, cleaner water, food security and human well-being.
