Forest industry increases investments

Electronic trading platforms are recording a significant increase in investment activity in the wood processing sector. According to analysts, the number of projects has grown by more than 50% in 2024, with most of the investments directed at the production of pulp, paper and cardboard. However, as industry experts note, this growth is associated with the implementation of previously postponed projects and equipment upgrades. At the same time, it is too early to talk about a significant increase in production and the launch of new construction projects, since high interest rates on loans make such investments less likely.

According to the TenderPro platform, RUB 49.5 billion has been invested in the woodworking sector since the beginning of 2024:

  • 43.5% of all investments went to the production of pulp, paper and cardboard;
  • 23.9% to the production of building materials;
  • 21.7% to furniture production;
  • 10.9% to biofuels (including pellets).

The overwhelming majority of companies (77.5%) make investments of up to RUB 500 million. The Central and Northwestern Federal Districts became the leaders in the number of projects, while in Siberia and the Urals the volume of investments is significantly lower.

Experts associate the surge in investment activity with adaptation to sanctions and the reorientation of supplies to other markets. EU bans from 2022 have significantly reduced the export of products to Europe, which previously occupied a significant share in supplies. China has become our country's main new partner, which requires adjusting strategies and upgrading production capacities.
