Import substitution of forestry equipment: key challenges and limitations
Following the cessation of forestry equipment supplies from European countries, import substitution in the industry has noticeably intensified. However, complete technological substitution remains elusive.
According to industry representatives, the Russian domestic market does not provide sufficient demand to organize production of the full range of equipment required for large-scale sawmills, plywood mills, and pulp and paper mills. To sustainably utilize machine-building capacity, access to foreign markets and the creation of export demand are required.
WHERE RESTRICTIONS REMAIN
- Russia lacks companies capable of producing a full range of equipment for large-scale forestry production facilities.
- There remains a significant shortage of domestically produced logging equipment.
- Critically important types of equipment (e.g., rotary debarkers for sawlogs and plywood logs) are produced on the global market by a limited number of companies in Sweden, Finland, and North America.
- Chinese manufacturers currently represent the main alternative to European suppliers.
WHICH SEGMENTS ARE ALREADY CLOSED
At the same time, a number of import substitution areas are demonstrating sustainable results. The industry's needs are almost fully met for:
- measuring systems and scanners;
- drying chambers;
- wood chipping and biofuel production equipment;
- boiler units;
- woodcutting tools.
Significant progress has been achieved in the IT sector. Automated control systems and software are being actively replaced by domestic solutions.
COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES OF RUSSIAN MANUFACTURERS
Russian companies maintain a strong position in design and engineering. Service is becoming a significant factor: the availability of spare parts warehouses, prompt technical support, and scheduled maintenance.
